Editing Software
Photoshop CS3 is expensive, but worth it. It is faster and
more capable than other photo editors. Check out the package
deals if you need a couple other products. If you're a
student, there is very attractive student pricing.

Photo Adjusting Software
Lightroom is quite different from Photoshop. In general, the
difference is that Photoshop alows you to apply filters so you
can make a picture look like something else (e.g. a pencil drawing,
a watercolor, a mosic) Photoshop also allows you to select
areas of a photo and move things around so you can make digital art.
Photoshop allows masks and painting and layers. Lightroom
allows none of that, it just lets you adjust color, contrast, and
curves quickly and easily, and is more suited to high volume editors
and to those who disdain "photoshoping" but still need to bring out
the detail in shadows and highlights.
